Thunder on Black Lake Day 1, 2025

The familiar thunder of racing engines echoed once again through the trees of southwest Olympia as the Black Lake Regatta roared back to life Saturday for an unforgettable kickoff to the annual summer classic. Beneath clear blue skies, families lined the shores early to claim their view of the high-octane tradition that brings together speed, heritage, and heart.

The event-more than just a race-delivered pure Americana: kids leaning over pit barriers wide-eyed at roaring motors, dads and daughters wrenching side-by-side, and generations of racers passing down stories soaked in race fuel and sunshine.

The shoreline came alive with the pulse of anticipation as sleek hydroplanes tore across the water, rooster tails flying high into the summer air. Cracker Box boats-a fan favorite-brought crowd-pleasing thunder to the lake, their roaring V8s kicking up spray and nostalgia in equal measure.

A special nod must go to the unsung heroes behind the scenes: the dedicated volunteers, rescue crews, and divers who made safety and efficiency look effortless. Their professionalism and precision are what keep this race running like clockwork, ensuring competitors and spectators alike can enjoy the event with peace of mind.

Among the day's highlights was the return of Karly Hearne, a local standout whose name has become synonymous with grit and speed on the water. Now in her 20s, Karly's racing  journey  began at just 11 years old. She competes in the SE (Stock Eliminator) class and pilots a boat affectionately named "The Turtle." Her presence at Black Lake drew well-earned attention as she prepared in the pits with poise, discipline, and the spark of a veteran racer.

Saturday's races were electric, but the atmosphere around them was just as powerful-an unmistakable blend of laughter, teamwork, and passion that defines the regatta community.

As the sun set behind the trees, teams prepped for Sunday's final heats, and families packed up with sunburned smiles and stories to carry home. Day one of the Black Lake Regatta proved again that this event is not just about speed-it's about tradition, family, and the spirit of summer in the Pacific Northwest.
